Habits
Joyce Bone
Constantly strive to create better habits for yourself. We are creatures of habit. For the most part our days are largely repetitive. We literally operate out of habit. Have you ever unwittingly turned the wrong way out of the habit? For example you robotically turned right instead of left at an intersection because the majority of the time it's the way you go? That's habit at work. If you can become mindful of your day-to-day habits you will see opportunity for improvement. Any personal improvements will be reflected in your work, which in turn can improve your bottom line. Try not to discount this theory. As of February 25, 2006 there are 298,184,349 Americans. Consider our national television watching habits. For most three hours a night is typical. What if every American read a book for a portion of that time instead? The implications would be astounding. Our vocabulary base would grow, our national context and social conscience would expand, our economy would improve, and unemployment rates would drop as more entrepreneurs were created. If you read one book a week that would be 52 books a year for a total of 520 books in 10 years. What would that number be multiplied by 298,184,349 Americans? My calculator won't compute that high but the effect would be dazzling. Do you think you would be more valuable in the marketplace with the knowledge of 520 books in your mind? Of course you would be. Would you be an innovator? Of course you would be. What I want you to start considering in your daily life is the long-range effect is of your habits. $3.00 per day at Starbucks doesn't seem that bad but multiply that out five days a week that's $780.00 year and $7,800.00 in 10 years. It's the ripple effect of our actions that can catch us by surprise. When making a decision multiply out the effect over 10, 20 years and see if its still worth doing. It is the tweaking of habits for the better that will greatly enhance your outcomes in life and business.
